It is uncommon for a woman to become pregnant during her period, although it IS likely!

The first day of menstruation (cycle day 1) lasts approximately 3-8 days. This length is unique to each person. Once menses is over, the fertile window and point of change will begin on the first day of observed cervical fluid (CF). Sperm could stay alive in the vagina for up to 5 days during this time, if given the alkalized environment that CF brings.
During ovulation, a mature egg will release from an ovary, move its way through the Fallopian tubes and embed itself into the nutritious uterine lining of the womb to be fertilized. All of this takes place within 24-48 hours!
Conception can only occur during ovulation
Ovulation occurs around cycle day 14 (in relation to a 28 day cycle). Keep in mind that ovulation can also take place further along in our cycles. This all depends on the person and their lifestyle. If an egg does not become fertilized within the 24-48 hour block for ovulation, the uterine lining will shed 12-16 days later as our next period.
Some may experience spotting in between periods. This is sometimes misled as menses, which sometimes makes it difficult to pinpoint cycle day 1. Track your cycles for at least 3 months to differentiate the menstrual phase versus ovulation phase.
Can a woman get pregnant during her period?
-
- If you experience 24 day {or less} cycles, the fertile window is likely to begin earlier as ovulation could occur closer to the end of menstruation. The chances of conception during menstruation are much higher in this case versus 28 day {or more} cycles.
- Conception could also take place during menses if ovulation did not occur in your previous cycle.
Track your cycles daily for at least 3 months to understand:
-
- Your average cycle length
- If ovulation was confirmed in your previous cycle
- The difference between your menstrual phase and ovulation phase
- The probability of becoming pregnant during your period
- Your point of change & fertile window length
- Your luteal phase length
- + More
Keep in mind
An ultrasound is the only way to predict the exact moment of ovulation. The three fertility indicators that give you the most precise ovulation estimations are cervix, cervical fluid, and basal body temperature observations.
