Ancient cultures had recognized and ritualized the correlation between the menstrual cycle and the phases of the moon. In fact, the term “menstruation” and “menses” come from the Latin and Greek words moon (mene) and month (menses).
The creative energies intertwined throughout the menstrual cycle carry unique placements and expressions, connected directly to our womb. Most women find that their cycles flow in one of two ways ~ either bleeding with the full or the new moon. Alternatively her bleeding may even land on a waxing or waning moon. All cycles are expressions of the unique feminine energies and neither are more correct or powerful than another.
Menstrual energies find their expression in the many forms of a woman’s creative nature.

New moon bleeding
When our fertile time coincides with the full moon, we are provided with the best conditions to express her creative energies in motherhood, conception or outward creative projects and passions.
Full moon bleeding
Bleeding with the full moon orients away from outward expressions of procreation and the material world. Therefore, the focus becomes aligned with inner development and self-expression.
How to track your bleeding time
Use a moon journal
Journal all feelings, emotions and bleeding times for a few months to begin to recognize unique patterns. Additionally, record your cyclic health, creative inspirations, and even libido. The hormones that are at-play during each phase of our cycles have a direct correlation to our moods, personality, etc.
Surrender to the feminine energy during pre-menstruation and menstruation
Slow down ~ Our physical need to slow down during menstruation is a potent sign that we are to reflect on both our internal and external environments. We are to savor our energy so that we can feel fueled during the rest of our cycle. This physical slowing down can allow us to become more aware of the feminine/yin energy we carry within ourselves, and above all, recognizing the alignment with the moon.
Our current culture is very quick-paced, productivity-based and masculine in the way we are taught to move quickly and continually. When we allow ourselves to slow down and just bleed, movement and walking become calm, gentle and even graceful. When we fight against it and continue to move quickly, this is when we begin to notice uncoordination and clumsiness.
Bleeding with different phases of the moon
We may notice that the connection between bleeding with the moon phases change over time. In short, this is due to our current emotions, goals or life circumstances. It is up to us to recognize this flow of change as a time of assessment on a mental level (by journaling her feelings and emotions in communion with the phases of the moon). At any one time, we hold all of these energies within ourselves. There is no fixed separation between each phase. However, during certain phases of our life, we might allow one phase to become repressed and the other to be more dominate. It is our role to recognize the balancing flow from one energy to another so that we may gain continuous strength, wisdom, and gentleness.
